360|Flex: Day 2 Recap

Okie, another awesome day has done and it is time for reporting. Here are the sessions I’ve attended today and notes accordingly.

Memory Management for Flex/Apollo Developers (by Jun Helder)

It was the great session and Jun presented with much enthusiasm. Again David Colettas was in the session and he covered well. This is that kind of session that powerpoint make sense and Jun will be posting his slide on his website soon posted here.

Flex Framework nitty grity (by Deepa Subramaniam from Flex SDK Team)

Again another great session by Deepa about some of the internals of the framework. The slides are now up on the Flex Team Blog. There are some internal you probably won’t know, so go check it out. For overview, get over to David and check it out.

ByteArray202 (by Ben Stuki)

Ben talked about using ByteArray to manipulate the binary data. Pretty much what you can do is said in the API. What Ben discussed is how you can manipulate it. For example, he showed the code sample to read the mp3 file and parse the ID3 tag and display the album cover & information about song in the component. All you need is imagination on how you want to use it. The main idea behind this talk is, to use the ByteArray to read the data that Flex/Flash doesn’t support natively and get it your way. Also, he mentioned about his work in progress about manipulating sound wave that is read in using ByteArray. Sounds cool!

Buzzword: how’d they build that? (by David Coletta from Buzzword)

I was trying to cover the Buzzword session using Buzzword but today we are having some wireless problem in the conference, so I turned to the good ‘ol vi. Dave gave a great presentation and the room was packed. Unfortunately, we don’t have much time to finish the presentation but it was a great delivery. He was asked to count how many time he said “quickly”, it is just 3 times, Dave. He posted the slides on his website. You get most of the information from the slide but one thing you didn’t see was how do they test the application. They have the internal tool that records the user action and generate the command that automatically spit out the test script. I thought it is very awesome idea and second of all they have executed well. Another impressive idea with making use of modularization is to split the module to load the login screen as quickly as possible and start loading the rest of the module while user start typing username and password. Overall, a lot of work has been done to get the text flowing on the flash player and executed well with good looking UI and good experience. However, this is just beginning step with basic features and cannot wait to see more feature rich Buzzword.

WebORB specific session (by Mark Piller)

This is more of the information session on the WebORB from MidNightCoders. It is interesting to see they have offered very compelling product for ease of maintaining the back end. I have not much to say other than it is worth to check out their site of their product.
